She was a reporter for The Washington Post nearly a decade, covering Grand Slam Tennis and Grand Slam Football, as being a basketball reporter at numerous Olympics. In 2004, Nichols was transferred to ESPN for a nine-year run where she won two Emmy Awards and appeared on several of the network's top frequented shows such as SportsCenter and NFL Countdown. She also reported for TBS broadcasting golf and baseball broadcasts, and Final Four broadcasts on CBS. It is the only nomination in the 42 years that have preceded this award to a woman out of more than 200 candidates.
